Melleny Melody and The Pop Machine SuperHappy Darkness (Gay Records)

You know those days when you are in a great mood and everything makes you giggle? Well, Super Happy Darkness is a soundtrack for those days. Melleny Melody & the Pop Machineıs bubble gum, Japan pop, high pitched voiced early 90ıs techno lounge beats may not agree with you the first time around, but give it a second listen. It will put a smile on your face and make you wanna dance-for the first half of the album at least. Mellenyıs voice and sardonic lyrics on songs like the first single "Doing Dishes" (I can do dishes all day long. Especially if you were watching me. Ohhh. Do you like watching me do dishes?) add the necessary punch to the Pop Machineıs old school beats and help make them seem new again. The second half of the album alone is quite a bit more somber and Melleny even leaves the Pop Machine alone to do their thing on "Eight Inch Pumps". All this really does is reinforce how much of this albumıs strength lies in Melleny Melodyıs big bouncy voice. Even the Pop Machine are at their best when Mellenyıs at her best. When she starts to wane, the giggles subside.
